Blogmas Day 10: Decorating a Gingerbread House

gingerbread-house

I’ll let you into a secret; I’ve never made a Gingerbread House before. Well, I still haven’t. But I’ve now decorated one.

To get into the spirit of Christmas, I thought it’d be nice to do something more traditional and fun to decorate a Gingerbread House.

Blogmas Day 9: My Fear of Father Christmas

my-fear-of-father-christmas

Father Christmas. Santa Clause. St Nick. The man of the moment. The Symbol of Christmas. Everyone loves a jolly old pudgy man who brings lots of presents for kids all over the world right?

Father Christmas. A big, scary old strange man who breaks into your house without consent, coming too close to you for your liking with a roaring laugh enough to hurt your tiny little eardrums.

The first? A description that seems to fit the typical seasonal icon that we hear so much about. The latter? My views on the terribly terrifying elderly bloke who scared me half to death.

I know what you’re thinking- “Jazz, he’s nice. He gives you presents.” Yeah, well he also knows when you’ve been sleeping and knows when you’re awake. To me? That sounds super stalkerish.

Okay, okay, I’m not afraid of the fictional character anymore, but when I was little and during the period where I believed he was indeed a real person, I was petrified. I don’t remember exactly what caused me to be so afraid (though, bare in mind, I have been diagnosed with anxiety. Could Santa be the root of the cause? Probably not, but clearly I was a nervous child since birth) but my Gran recalls that when I was just the tender age of two, a Father Christmas tried to take me off my mother outside a supermarket and I was not having any of it. The following years saw me absolutely trembling with fear over him. I remember at a very young age being in a B&Q and there he was; my version of Satan. A big bloke head to toe in red and a dodgy beard to cover his true identity. All he wanted to do was give me a lollipop, but I let loose from my mother’s grip and ran down each aisle. Every aisle I reached the end of, his face would peer followed by a high pitched scream from myself before running away again. My mother had to tell him to just give up because I did not and would not like him, regardless of how many free lollipops he had to bribe me with.

Blogmas Day 8: Christmas Crafts

christmas-crafts

It’s time to get creative! With the big day less than a week away, I’ve spent time with my mother to demonstrate some Christmas crafts for you to do. Whether for yourself or to give to others.

Christmas Heart decorations

Add a touch of homemade love to your Christmas tree with these easy to make heart decorations.

You will need: Scraps of fabric, stuffing of your choice, paper, pencil, scissors, pins, sewing machine or sewing kit.

15609222_10154805873150489_286615049_o

  1. Fold a piece of paper in half
  2. Draw half a heart on the fold line
  3. Cut the heart
  4. Open to reveal a whole heart
  5. Pin to fabric and cut around the heart
  6. With right sides facing, hand or machine stitch most of the way around, leave a gap to turn out
  7. Turn out and stuff with stuffing. This could be old tights, stuffing from an old cushion, beans, rice, etc.
  8. Sew the rest and add a loop to hang. You can use the ribbon inside your clothing used to hang or string

Mammy’s note: “We used craft fabric to make ours but we have also used old ripped PJs in a Christmas pattern previously, which is ideal for crafts on a budget.”

Santa Egg Hats

Make breakfast more festive with these cute little Santa hats for your eggs.

You will need:  red and white yarn and knitting needles (4mm, UK size 8)

Why blogging is so important to me

screen-shot-2016-12-07-at-01-30-37

There’s a lot going on in my mind right now and I feel like it’s best if I write a blog post. I don’t really mind if it’s not read by many or anyone at all, but I just feel like writing things down is a stress reducer for me.

I’ve mentioned many times and maybe my regular readers will be fully aware of my passion for writing. I’ve always enjoyed it and even won the ‘Best Writer’ award way back in Year 6 in primary school. My teacher said in the speech he gave about how at 11 years old I could write better than most adults, which was just a shock to me, since I just write how I think.

I think my passion really developed, though, as a teenager. I had a laptop (one of many over the years) and would just write and write. It wasn’t until I joined my local youth website, Wicid, that I realised it genuinely was what I wanted to do for a career. My field of writing changed from fictional to factual. I’ve always been a fan of those teen magazines which talk about celebrities. Not in a bashing tabloid kind of way, but more of a ‘fangirl’ and praising kind of way. I used to read all the magazines. From ‘Girl Talk’ when I was about 6 to 10 before moving onto ‘Sugar’, ‘Shout’, ‘Mizz’ and ‘Bliss’ as I reached secondary school. I think that’s where I picked up my tone of writing – light hearted, cheeky and as if I’m talking to a friend.

Fast forward a few years and I managed to get a job with a pop culture website. I volunteered for two years before gaining a full time job, which was essentially my dream. But one thing stood in the way – my mental health.

My favourite Winter Yankee Candles

yankee-candle

‘Tis the season to get cosy and for me, I think it’s a necessity to have a good candle. My favourite kind are scented and Yankee Candle are without a doubt my favourite brand when it comes to a good smelling one to light and have such a cosy feeling to them. I’ve narrowed down my top five Wintery Yankee Candles to share with you to inspire your seasonal scents.

Candy Cane Lane

candy-cane-lane

This sweet scent has a delicious aroma of peppermint mixed with hints of cookies and vanilla icing, making it a treat for all sweet-tooths alike. The crimson red shade of the wax also blends in with the typical Christmas colours giving the perfect cosy glow.

Berry Jam

berry-jam

This one isn’t part of Yankee’s Christmas collection, but it’s definitely a gorgeous winter flavour. The stunning scent consists of berry notes including fresh berries and pomegranate. It reminds me of some Winter cooking going on during a cosy evening. It really brings the room to life and making your mouth water a slight.

November Monthly Favourites 2016

november-monthly-favourites

Hard to believe this is my last monthly favourites of 2016! Next month, I’ll be doing the big annual favourites from the past 12 months. Anyway, let’s get on with it, shall we?

24 Hrs (Deluxe Edition) – Olly Murs

olly-murs-24-hrs

Back with album number five, Olly Murs brings a whole set of songs and this time he’s getting personal, with tales to tell of his recent relationship coming to an end. The album sees Murs at his most vulnerable, really putting his feelings out on the line in the form of art. It’s no ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ and definitely no ‘Troublemaker’, but Olly never likes to make two songs sound too similar. My favourite tracks are definitely ‘Flaws’, ‘You Don’t Know Love’, ‘Years and Years’ and ‘Private’, though I do adore every track. I applaud him for being so open without stabbing a knife in the back or heart of his ex.

Glory Days (Deluxe Edition) – Little Mix

little-mix

After their lead single from album four, Shout Out To My Ex, took the world by a storm, is it any surprise that Little Mix’s latest release could be considered a work of art? Little Mix change their sound with every album – no two sound the same. Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade have evolved yet again and love is very much the theme of this record. Heartbreak, romance and a sprinkle of sassy attitude, the girls have grown up and so has their music. It’s a big leap from ‘DNA’ and a whole new era from ‘Get Weird’, not to mention a different sound from ‘Salute’ – I think a lot of people would take a strong liking to this new record. My favourite songs include ‘Power’, ‘Beep Beep’, ‘Down & Dirty’ and of course ‘Shoutout To My Ex’. If you’re looking for fun, a good time and relatable lyrics, then this is the album for you.

Cute Stocking Stuffers For That Person Who Loves Pink

cute-pink-stocking-stuffers

There’s almost ALWAYS that one person in our lives who just loves pink. And if you didn’t know-“pink isn’t just a colour; it’s an attitude.” So for your friends and family who feel pretty pink, here are some of the cutest stocking stuffers to get them this Christmas.

Alice in wonderland pamper me disney bubble bath and body lotion duo – £7.99

alice-bubble-bath

Okay, can we please talk about this gorgeous set? I love Alice in Wonderland and this is such an adorable set. It’s not too tacky, either, and the packaging isn’t too “child-like”, either, which sometimes happens to be the case with some pink and Disney designs. I’d also like to point out, much like in my Disney gift guide, there are a lot of amazing gifts such as this for the Disney lover on the site, so if you want to stick to these style gifts, definitely check them out. If I had an endless bank account balance, I’d probably buy the entire site.

Available from Truffle Shuffle

Pink Irridescent glass jar and straw – £6.99

pink-jar

Jars as glasses have been some kind of trend for ages – so much so that my mother bought a set for us to have at home. I’ll definitely admit, there’s a lot of room for your beverage of choice in them! This is really cute and really useful. I’d say this is a perfect bloggers cup if you don’t want to use a tumbler cup and it’s a cold drink because you can have the drink next to your computer and there’s a highly unlikely chance of you spilling it.

Available from New Look

Gold Glitter Instax Frame – £6.00

instax-frame

Okay, look; I know I said pink and this is gold but hear me out – pink and gold go together. It’s just a known fact. Instax are a massive thing at the moment and I, for one, love my Instax camera. This is a cute little gift which can be totally personal, whether you have an Instax photo to put in the frame or the recipient has an Instax camera and would like to frame one. I need one of these for my desk for sure.

Available from Urban Outfitters

Love in Paris Pure Butter Biscuits TIN – £4.99

love-in-paris

I have the Parisian theme running through my bedroom so this would be an adorable storage tin once the biscuits were consumed. If you think about it… like really think… you’re technically giving two gifts here. Something edible and a piece of storage.

Available from TK Maxx

Really Tiny Booklight in pink – £6.99

booklight

As a night reader, I’ll let you into a secret; this is probably on the top five of my most wanted Christmas gifts. These things are genius and any bookworm who is lacking one will thank you for this.

Available from Waterstones

Gingerbread socks – £3.50

socks

Is it even Christmas without one pair of socks?  These adorable Christmassy socks are a must for a stocking, no explanation even needed.

Available from Accessorize

Zoella Beauty Spa in a Jar – £10.00

Zoella Spa in a Jar

Again, smellies and bath items are another staple Christmas present and YouTube phenomenon, Zoella, has released a gorgeous Christmas collection. I know lots of people tend to think because she appeals to a younger audience, her products won’t be up to scratch for people aged 17+ but I promise you, at 21 , I’m still a big Zoella fan and her products are pretty amazing. Rather than bubblegum floss, Zoe’s products are actually very appealing for the older end of her audience age bracket. Heck, even my mother and gran are keen on the scents and products (though they’re not allowed any of mine). I think even if you haven’t got a fan in the family, maybe gift this to someone who really does love bath products because this stuff is amazing.

Available from Feel Unique

Blossom Rose Tealights – £5.95

pink-tealights

Just some cute, quaint little candles to keep the cosy atmosphere in the winter months because not every month is Christmassy! Come January, I’d love to light these little beauties up to prolong those snuggly vibes.

Available from Prezzybox

The Queen Is Sleeping Eye Mask – £3.49

queen-sleeping-mask

We all know a Sleeping Beauty who just needs to make sure they have enough shut eye.  This luxurious eyemask is fit for royalty who need to be well rested.

Available from findmeagift.co.uk

Bubblegum iPhone 6 case – £12.00pink-phonecase

This gorgeous case is perfect for any iPhone user who wants a splash of pink in their life. It’s by Skinnydip who is a growing brand with a popularity for their phone cases and accessories, so the brand alone is something to be excited about.

Available from Topshop

I hope you’ve found this pink-themed stocking stuffer guide useful and you find the perfect presents for Christmas. What’s your favourite from the list? Leave a comment below!

My top tips for getting the most out of a signing event

Olly Murs Signing HMV

I recently met Olly Murs again at his latest album signing in Cardiff and with so many people talking online about how they missed out on the opportunity because they weren’t aware. Therefore, I’ve decided to list some of my top tips to make sure you get the best out a signing event.

1. Sign up to newsletters and programmes

screen-shot-2016-11-16-at-16-58-52

To make sure you’re the first to know about an event, you need to sign up to all the relevant newsletters and programmes. For example, if you are a fan of Olly Murs or Little Mix, you need to sign up to their newsletters which you will find on their websites. There are also some great services where you can get priority access to exclusive events or tickets/wristbands which are available to you before the general public. I’m a member of ‘Pure HMV’ which is a loyalty programme with HMV. You use your card to collect points at every purchase (both online and in store) and you can spend those points on money-can’t-buy items, including priority signing wristbands rather than actually paying for the wristband.

2.  Ticket or first come, first serve?

tyler-oakley

Most signings I’ve been to are ticketed/wristband which is usually bought online, but occasionally there are ‘first come, first serve’ events, meaning you need to be dedicated in travelling to the venue as early as possible. If it’s ticketed, find out when the event goes on sale. On some occasions, you may be asked to go in store to preorder the book/CD/DVD and that purchase means you will get a free wristband to the signing. You need to try and get in store ASAP from the announcement. Sometimes there are specific dates you have to go down to the store and others are again first come, first serve from the moment the announcement is made (which was the case for the  latest Olly signing and to my pure luck, I was 2 minutes away from the store!) If the ticket is on sale online, then you need to find out when they go on sale. Get the retailer’s website loaded in advance in two tabs. Two tabs higher your chance of getting tickets, but you absolutely need to be like a hawk, keeping an eye on both tabs because one will be further in the queue than the other.

3. Speak with the retailer who are holding the signing

HMV Cardiff

Whether you go in store to talk to the staff or just tweet them (there’s a high chance they have a Twitter account for each store or a general customer service account), find out as much info as possible. Ask how much of a crowd is anticipated, find out if selfies are allowed, etc. Just ask as many questions you may have in advance so you are fully aware on the day.

4. Arrive early

olly signing

One way or another, you’re going to have to queue. So, make sure you arrive early. Some people do the waiting hours in advance, meaning they’ll be closer to the front of the queue when the doors open. Arriving early does mean you’ll still be waiting, but it means you’ll be getting your turn earlier than others.

5. Respect the staff

security

They are there for your safety and protection. I know sometimes they seem a little bossy and you can occasionally get one who is a bit of a control freak, but please just listen to what they say and ask of you because it makes the situation easier on everyone.

6. Don’t bring extra items for signing

merch

You can only get the one item signed, which is the CD/DVD/Book they are promoting. I’ve seen some parents in particular bring a bulk of merch to get signed for kids, family and friends but there’s just no time. Remember, there are hundreds of people to get through so you need to just have the one item.

7. It’s quantity, not quality

negativespace-2

Usually, that saying is the other way around, but in this case it really is more about quantity than quality, meaning they need to get as many fans in for the signing as possible and you won’t get to have a great amount of time for a full blown conversation or anything, so please don’t get upset or annoyed. I’d love to have had a natter with Olly Murs, Tyler Oakley and the like, but it isn’t possible. A light chit chat is usually possible, you know – “how are you?” “hope you’re well!” “Love you lots” and all that, but this isn’t a coffee date, sadly.

8. Get your phone ready!

olly-jazz

Most days, you can take a selfie at signings or a security guard will take a photo for you. You need to make sure there’s enough space on your phone to take a photo and that it’s ready on camera mode because this makes everything run smoothly and efficiently.

9. Leave the signing area ASAP

screen-shot-2016-11-16-at-20-43-58

The security need you to move from the area ASAP because there are lots of people that need to be able to get the signing done and leave. Please try and move as soon as you can so the system works like a conveyer belt with no hold ups.

10. Disabled? Ask for help!

disabled

If you or someone who is with you is disabled and is unable to walk (ie: in a wheelchair or on crutches), make sure you liaise with staff ASAP. If you’re in store before the event purchasing the tickets, speak to a member of staff to ask for advice. No worries if you aren’t at the store in advance, though, just arrive in plenty of time and speak to the security guard as they’ll be happy to assist you.

I hope these tips come of use to you. Do you have any tips for signings? Comment below!
