World Book Day: Five books I adored growing up

Today is World Book Day, which is an amazing day to celebrate the incredible invention of books for a good cause, Book Aid International. To celebrate 20 years of this special day, I’ve decided to get nostalgic and share five of my favourite children’s books that I absolutely adored when growing up.

The Suitcase Kid – Jacqueline Wilson

Jacqueline Wilson was my favourite author as a kid. In fact, she still is one I very much highly value. I had the whole collection of her books growing up, but it was a toss up between The Suitcase Kid and Vicky Angel being my favourite. Since I only had the audiobook of Vicky Angel, I’ve picked The Suitcase Kid as one to mention in my top five. I remember being so hooked on reading it, it may even be the first book I couldn’t put down. With the storyline focusing heavily on a family dividing, it gave me a real insight as to what it’s like to be a child dealing with a divorce. My parents divorced when I was a baby but managed to remain the best of friends, so I was quite lucky in that sense, so to read this story, I was really given an in depth insight as to what my fellow peers may have been going through at that age. This was definitely one of my favourite children’s books.

Withering Tights – Louise Rennison

This was perhaps my favourite book by Louise Rennison, despite her bestsellers being The Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging series.  I loved getting to know about Tallulah Casey, the bubbly 14 year old with a passion for acting and following her journey to Dother Hall for a summer of acting courses. The supporting characters are highly amusing and got me giggling quite a bit throughout the book. I had a passion for drama during the time I read this book, so it was exciting to be able to relate to the main character in that aspect and was a great teen read that I fell in love with instantly. Hearing about Louise Rennison’s recent passing broke my heart and brought back such fond memories of reading this book.

St David’s Day Leek and Potato Soup Recipe

Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus, pawb! Today is St David’s Day here in Wales, which celebrates the Welsh patron, St David and is the national day of Wales.  There’s lots of ways the country celebrates this special day – from attending services with traditional dances and songs, holding Eisteddfod festival events and children usually dressing in traditional costumes of Welsh Ladies, waistcoats for boys or wearing the Welsh rugby shirt. To celebrate, I’ll be sharing with you my leek and potato soup recipe which is a pretty simple dish to serve on this patriotic day. It’s quick and easy, making it the perfect starter to a three course meal or just to have as a lone dish.

Ingredients

  • 2ibs of potato
  • 2 large leeks
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 onion
  • 1 veggie stock cube
  • Salt
  • Pepper

  • Chop and wash your vegetables and add to saucepan.
  • Cover vegetables with water
  • Add your veggie stock cube
  • Add a pinch of salt and pepper
  • Bring your soup to boil
  • Simmer until vegetables are soft (aprox. 20 minutes)
  • Hand blend the soup down, leaving some chunks
  • Taste and adjust seasoning
  • Enjoy your leek and potato soup

I hope you enjoy this delicious dish. Have you ever tried leek and potato soup before? What’s your favourite soup?

Review: Cardiff Viva! Vegan Festival @ City Hall

Saturday 4th January saw vegans, vegetarians and animal lovers alike all flock to Cardiff City Hall to check out Viva! Vegan Festival.  The event was hosted by the charity organisation, Viva, who campaigns for a vegan world.

I saw the Facebook event a few weeks in advance and decided to get my mother and I two VIP tickets so we could get a goody bag and jump the queue to get straight to the event. The event consisted of two floors dedicated to the festival. From stalls and talks, to a kids’ corner and cookery demonstrations – there was a lot going on around us.

Being a life-long Vegetarian and my mother one of 30 years, we were really looking forward to finding new things to our taste and catering needs. Our diet is mainly vegan and always felt as if we should give Veganism a try. It’s safe to say that this event definitely swayed us to that decision. There were countless stalls consisting of eateries along with cruelty free beauty, apparel, shops and organisations.

The food was absolutely delicious. For my lunch, I headed to the Mex It Up stall – which serves Tex-Mex street food – to try some BBQ Jackfruit, something I wasn’t entirely sure I’d like, but boy was I wrong. I loved it so much that I couldn’t help but sing its praises for a full 48 hours after consumption!

Despite feeling full from lunch, I did make sure I picked up different things to take home with me. There was so much for people to choose from across all cuisines. I bought two Sweedy Todd pies from a stall called Mr Nice Pie (the pun had me sold), which consisted of sundried tomatoes, lentils, roasted bell peppers, root vegetables and tomatoes in traditional Victorian herbs and spices.

How to Make Self-Love Your Valentine This Year

Valentine’s Day is scarily close already and while it’s a cliché to shower your partner or crush with additional love for this alleged special day, there’s another special someone you also need to pay attention to… you!

We often forget the meaning of self-love and to participate in the act of caring for ourselves. Like love in general, it should matter more than just on the 14th February, but if it’s going to be a thing, then maybe this day is one you pay in particular attention on giving yourself love. There are so many different ways you can practise self-loving, but here are some of my examples to get you thinking.

Invest some time for yourself

It can be 30 minutes, an hour, or even a whole day! Just take time out for yourself. This can be dedicated to doing one thing or multiple activities, but you time is essential and it can do you some real good to spend time with your own thoughts. And I’m sure you’re a pretty interesting person to spend alone time with.

Treat Yo’Self

Seriously. It’s okay to do it! It doesn’t have to be through materialistics, though there’s nothing wrong with that at all. You could run yourself an amazing bubble bath, paint your nails, eat some ice cream, read a good book, binge a bit of Netflix… just give yourself a little something. I love to run a bath full of LUSH products, put some music on as well as a face mask and just relax before putting on a pair of my favourite PJs. It’s soothing and a great way to spend time alone.

Catfished

Why you shouldn’t be ashamed if you’ve been Catfished

catfish

/katfɪʃ/

noun

 2.
USinformal
  1. lure (someone) into a relationship by adopting a fictional online persona.
“he was being catfished by a cruel prankster”

If you’re an avid social media user (and watch MTV religiously), you’re probably aware of the term ‘Catfishing’. There may even be a chance that you have been catfished yourself. While some people watch the MTV show ‘Catfish’ hosted by Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, many people tend to laugh at what is considered the stupidity and misfortune of the victims. I, on the other hand, find the documentary series highly fascinating. True, some of the fictitious personas on there can often seem pretty obvious in the fact that they are definitely not an actual person, but that doesn’t mean you should be ashamed if you have swum into the Catfish’s trap.

Catfished

Social media can be amazing or it can be terrible. I personally have many positive experiences with it and making online friends can be a lot of fun, if you are cautious and know what you’re doing. 99% of the people I have befriended online are exactly who they say they are and I’ve met the majority of them in person, if not video chatted with them should they live too far away. However, I can put my hands up and admit that I – a big fan of the MTV show and have seen every episode released – have been Catfished. Products I want to try in 2017

2016 saw a fair bit of venturing out for me with regards to products. I bought my first high end foundation, fell in love with various lipsticks and picked up a few eyeshadow palettes. In 2017, I want to venture out even further. They don’t necessarily need to be make up related, though there are a fair few I’d really like to try. I see so many bloggers and vloggers using some gorgeous products, some quite old since they first hit the shelves, but have never ended up in my possession.

Here are some products I’d love to try throughout 2017.

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation SPF 10

I have heard endless praise from beauty babes everywhere about this foundation. While I find the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation lasts a long time, I’d love to be able to compare the two to see what the similarities and differences are.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquefied Lipsticks

I’ve seen these in a lot of Instagram flat lay pictures and Oh My God, they look amazing. I’m really into matte lip products at the moment and would really love to try one of these. I haven’t set my heart on a particular shade, though I must admit, this one in Miso Pretty looks really cute.

GlitterEyes PressedGlitter Romance Trio

There has been a major hype of these on Facebook and after seeing some gorgeous swatches, I absolutely need them. I’m kind of sad I didn’t discover these in time for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but I’d really like to try a glitter eye look a few times throughout 2017.

My 2017 Bucket List

I’m not really one for resolutions. I used to make them when I was younger, but they weren’t of any real significance. However, there are things I want to do within 2017 which I wouldn’t really call resolutions, but just things I’d like to see happen. So, we’re going to call it my 2017 bucket list and go from there.

Go travelling

I wouldn’t say like pack my bags and go across Europe or something, but I’d like to just go places more. Maybe a trip to London, hopefully one to Paris or Brighton. Just get out of my usual surroundings. It’d be really nice to just go somewhere and enjoy myself.

Get a new tattoo

I really love my first tattoo, but I want to get another one. I’m not planning to get as crazily inked as my dad was, but I’d like a few meaningful ones. I’m not going to tell you the design I want to get, because I want to be a surprise, but it’s a small one and I’ve wanted it for a good while now.
