why feminism is important

Why Feminism is important to me

CN:  Rape, slut-shaming and abuse are some of the topics discussed but not in great detail

feminism

ˈfɛmɪnɪz(ə)m/

noun

The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.

I may have mentioned it once or twice, but never really gone into much about why I’m a feminist and why it’s important to me. People often tend to see the topic as ‘taboo’ or really misinterpret what feminism is about. It is not something in which women are “man haters” or feel that the female gender is superior to the male. The female gender has been oppressed for as long as history can remember. Of course, not everyone is aware of the history and often tend to base it on “well, I don’t feel oppressed, my life is great,” or ” I treat women with respect, therefore there is equality,” which is rather closed minded. I can straight away admit that growing up in my life, it was a close-knit family and there was indeed a lot of respect for all genders. However, it’s when I began to finally socialise more, make friends out of my small, caucasian-based community that I began to really see the difference. In the last few years, I’ve made friends from pretty much every walk of life. Non-binary genders, LGBTQA+ community, different races, religions, rich, poor, famous, nobodies and you really begin to learn.

Feminism is important to me. Feminism is important to me because there are so many consequences of being a female. Even if up in my life until I finally stepped foot out into the world I felt extremely privileged, you wake up and see reality. Feminism is important to me because when I or my female friends or family go out, we are told “to be careful” and “don’t walk alone” because there is a fear of being raped. Feminism is important to me because we as a society are teaching women to change how we dress instead of teaching men to not rape. Because approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year, meaning there’s roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts. And usually, there is very much a lot of victim blaming.

My 2016 Favourites

Can you believe another year has come to an end? Because I can’t. I feel like everytime I blink, a whole 12 months has passed by. Insane. I’ve discovered a lot of things this year, so of course I’m going to do a post dedicated to them and rave about my love for these favourites.

Books

Tanya Bakes by Tanya Burr

tanya-bakes

This is Tanya’s second book release. With the popularity proven with the baking chapter of her first book, ‘Love Tanya’, and major love shown for her baking videos, Tanya released this gorgeous book full of amazing recipes which are not too complicated and caters for her entire audience, both young and old. I tried a few recipes with my mother and I highly enjoyed making her  ‘Sunday Cake’ which was adorable to read about an old tradition. There are other recipes from her friends and family which really makes this book so personal. I can’t wait to try making other treats.

Our World by Little Mix

our-world

To be given the insight of life in one of the world’s biggest girl groups of this decade is really interesting. Keeping it real and not over glorifying the glitz and glam that fame brings, Jesy, Perrie, Leigh-Anne and Jade share a view of the world through their eyes. What’s really worth commending is that the girls don’t shy away from the struggles they face. Though their face on billboards and their music played worldwide, The 2011 X Factor winners are still very much down to Earth and openly discuss struggles they’ve faced that many of their fans can relate to. I highly enjoyed this book and getting to know the girls on a more personal level. Another enjoyable aspect is that they talk to the fans as if they are on the same level, rather than talking down as if they are more superior, which is always highly appreciated by fans.

Available from W H Smith for £7.99

Beauty

LUSH’s Rub Rub Rub Shower scrub

Rub Rub Rub

When my friend, Lily, introduced me to this scrub, I was blown away. More so by the fact that it is an amazing alternative to typical shampoo and conditioner. It washes my hair so well and gives it a lot of volume. If you want gorgeous beach babe hair, this product used in the shower is amazing. I cannot get enough of it!

Boxing Day Sales

My Boxing Day Sales Picks 2016

Dinner has been devoured, bellies are full and the Christmas specials are on the TV. The biggest part of Christmas 2016 is done and dusted, but now it’s time for one of my most favourite bits – the sales!

If you are a teen or young adult you may prefer to have smaller presents to open and then have money to spend in the sales, or just want to shop them anyway. I’ve done some research and picked out some of the best deals for this year.

FASHION

New LookTopshop and River Island have already made a start in the game by opening their sales Christmas Eve. Up to a whopping 70% off across all departments including Curves, Petitie, Tall, Maternity, Mens and much more.

Boohoo are also joining the sales with 60% off as well as H&M offering the same percentage off.

Very is another with up to half price across the entire site as well as fashion. Also in the sales, John Lewis are offering up to half price on womenswear as well as different departments having sales.

Blogmas Bonus Day: My Christmas Routine

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-06-27-48

I know I’ve done my 12 Days of Blogmas, but I’ve decided to do one extra post because it’s Christmas Eve! How exciting?

I’ve shared with you recently how people from all around the world celebrate their Christmas, so I thought I’d share with you how I personally spend the day.

Christmas has changed vastly since my dad passed away. Last year we decided to do things completely differently where we had guests over for Christmas dinner which we cooked ourselves, rather than going out as usual, but this year, we’re going back to original plans, but making sure we keep my father close in memory.

daddy
A photo I decided to take of my dad one year when we helped out at a Christmas event – yes, he was very inked!

I usually hate getting up in the morning, I don’t normally get to see what early looks like, but even at 21, I’m so excited and cannot wait to get up. I barely even sleep. Since I’m now “an adult” and no longer “at the age to get up at the crack of dawn”, we usually tend to get up around 8:00am – though that’s impossible for my mother since she is an early bird, but likes her coffee and chill in the mornings. Then everyone gets up, has breakfast (usually pan au chocolât and orange juice, which is my favourite) and my stepdad will head to my gran’s to pick her up. When she arrives, tea and coffee is made before we all go into the living room and sit next to our “Santa sacks” (basically a massive Christmas bag with our presents in). The old routine was to each take it in turn to open a present, but with one missing, we’ve decided to switch things up. On the count of three, we dive into our presents and get opening, while showing one another what we received and thanking one another for what the other has bought us.

Blogmas Day 12: Films on TV Christmas 2016

films-on-tv-christmas

Can you believe it’s the last day of Blogmas?! I’ve had such an amazing time working on these blog posts and sharing them with you. I definitely think I’ll be doing the full 24 days next year.

Following from yesterday’s post, because there’s so much on over Christmas, I decided to dedicate a separate post to what films are on. So for the final post, here’s what movies you need to know about being on this Christmas.

Christmas Eve

A Christmas Carol

jim_carrey_a_christmas_carol_movie_still

Jim Carrey’s animated take on the Charles Dickens’ classic magically transports you back to the 19th Century to tell the tale of miserable old Ebenezer Scrooge and his pure hatred for the festive period. While a story many of us have come to know, it’s one you can never grow tired of, especially with the fantastic animation of this movie version.

Airs 11:30AM on BBC One

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

This fantasy sequel of ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ sees the Pevensie children summoned to return to Narnia to help Prince Caspian fight the dark forces of the despotic Lord Miraz.

Airs 2:15PM on BBC One

One Hundred and One Dalmatians

My favourite Disney film! The Disney 1996 animation is what made the breed so popular and well loved (and is the reason behind my huge love for them… and owner of four in my 21 years.) Join Pongo and Perdita in an extraordinary journey to find their beloved puppies after the evil Cruella De Vil captures them for her no good selfish plans involving fur fashion.

Airs 4:20PM on ITV

Blogmas Day 10: Decorating a Gingerbread House

gingerbread-house

I’ll let you into a secret; I’ve never made a Gingerbread House before. Well, I still haven’t. But I’ve now decorated one.

To get into the spirit of Christmas, I thought it’d be nice to do something more traditional and fun to decorate a Gingerbread House.

Blogmas Day 8: Christmas Crafts

christmas-crafts

It’s time to get creative! With the big day less than a week away, I’ve spent time with my mother to demonstrate some Christmas crafts for you to do. Whether for yourself or to give to others.

Christmas Heart decorations

Add a touch of homemade love to your Christmas tree with these easy to make heart decorations.

You will need: Scraps of fabric, stuffing of your choice, paper, pencil, scissors, pins, sewing machine or sewing kit.

15609222_10154805873150489_286615049_o

  1. Fold a piece of paper in half
  2. Draw half a heart on the fold line
  3. Cut the heart
  4. Open to reveal a whole heart
  5. Pin to fabric and cut around the heart
  6. With right sides facing, hand or machine stitch most of the way around, leave a gap to turn out
  7. Turn out and stuff with stuffing. This could be old tights, stuffing from an old cushion, beans, rice, etc.
  8. Sew the rest and add a loop to hang. You can use the ribbon inside your clothing used to hang or string

Mammy’s note: “We used craft fabric to make ours but we have also used old ripped PJs in a Christmas pattern previously, which is ideal for crafts on a budget.”

Santa Egg Hats

Make breakfast more festive with these cute little Santa hats for your eggs.

You will need:  red and white yarn and knitting needles (4mm, UK size 8)

Blogmas Day 7: A Helpful Hamper

Christmas is about giving and it’s important to remember not just your friends and family, but those in need, too.

Normally at Christmas, I would do a hamper either for my uncle who live alone or my dad or even my step brother when he was at uni, but with circumstances changing, this year we have decided to create a hamper for someone in need. These could be for absolutely anyone you feel would benefit, but this year we will be giving it to the local food bank for those who need it.

15555295_10154796066710489_83919435_o

While it looks extravagant, this cost us so little as we would put one or two items at a time in with our shopping and didn’t really affect the costs at all. It doesn’t have to be branded – it could be the store’s own (ie: ASDA Smart Price), anything really is beneficial.

Of course, Christmas is very close to us now, but if you could pick up even five pounds worth on your Christmas shop. Perhaps in the new year, you could make it a resolution to buy one or two tinned items or food that isn’t dated to save and then make a hamper for someone. An elderly neighbour, someone who isn’t as fortunate financially or unable to get to the shops. If you donate to your local food bank, they usually have a list of what they typically run out of most. Any donation is hugely appreciated and the warmth you feel for helping someone is truly a special Christmas gift alone.
