Disney Nerd: A Dream is A Wish Found at Primark with Disney

It’s no secret that Primark have definitely gone up in people’s estimations over the past few years and now Disnerds are majorly impressed with everything Disney at Primark. After being blown away with the amount of amazing Disney products available there on my last visit, I thought I’d do a round up of some of the must haves.

Beauty and the Beast socks – £3.00

With the release of the live action remake, it’s no surprise that Disney at Primark have jumped on the Beauty and the Beast bandwagon. These were the first thing on display in the Cardiff Primark so they automatically fell straight into my basket. These socks are so cute and affordable, I couldn’t say no! Perfect for any fan of the animation or the remake.

Bambi cup – £5.00

This cup is so fricking adorable! I’m really into cute and quaint cups, so this would definitely earn a place in my cup cupboard. Bambi is such an adorable Disney character and there’s quite a lot of homeware with him and Thumper on, so Bambi fans need to get a move on to see all the Disney at Primark because a large section is full of these sweet woodland creatures.

Review: Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Ever since the first announcement of the film being made, I have been desperate to see the live action of Beauty and the Beast. Two long years later, the day arrived and I made sure my mother and I were to see it on the day of release. Having fallen so in love with the original Disney animation released in 1991, I had high expectations for the remake.

The film is suitable for all the family; from the tiny tots to the big kids at heart, Beauty and the Beast has the capability of winning the hearts of people of all age groups. The first thing I noticed with this film in comparison to the animation is that it’s far more detailed, which is probably why it’s of a greater length than I expected. It was refreshing to be able to learn more about each character in this one, with a bit more backstory to who they are.

Another difference is that the violence in this version is a bit more graphic but nothing that’s too disturbing. Sword fights are more visual and theres a few punches from the likes of Gaston, but nothing that’s in need of PG and very minimal gore.

It’s a step in the right direction to see a racially diverse cast in the film, especially compared to the 1991 version. Representation is hugely important and to see even some of the supporting cast of different races was a big step towards better equality.

Disney Nerd: 10 facts about the live adaption of Beauty and the Beast

We are just days away until the release of Beauty and the Beast in cinemas, so to get you in the mood for an enchanted tale coming to a screen near you soon, here are 10 facts about Beauty and the Beast’s live action remake.

#1

Ryan Gosling was originally offered the role of the Beast, but turned it down for a role in La La Land, instead. Emma Watson, on the other hand, was offered a role in La La Land, but decided to take on the role of Belle. Nice bit of film swapsies, there.

#2

Disney originally weren’t too sure about making the live adaption of the film as a musical. That’s when director, Bill Condon, stepped in and said “With all due respect, I think you’re crazy. The songs are too good. You’re going to spend all this time making a huge, gorgeous live-action “Beauty and the Beast” and not do ‘Be Our Guest’?” And what a relief, how could you skip some of Disney’s most iconic songs in the remake?!

#3

Despite the film not being released until this week, filming was completed over 18 months prior on the 27th August 2015.

#4

Though he now plays the role in the live action, Sir Ian McKellen originally turned down the voice of Cogsworth in the original animation of Beauty and the Beast back in 1991.

#5

In preparation of the role of Belle, Emma Watson re-watched the original Disney release of Beauty and the Beast and began to take singing classes. Some real dedication right there.

Disney Nerd: Walk in Belle’s footsteps and visit the locations which inspired Beauty and the Beast

Everyone is familiar with the scenery of the little town that Belle and her father, Maurice, hail from in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast but the inspiration had to come from somewhere. In this blog post, I’ll be giving you an insight of the different destinations that are said to have inspired the Beauty and the Beast Locations.

Alsace, France

Alsace is located is a region in France, the heart of Europe, with an abundance of architectural and cultural gems. It’s no surprise  that the film has links to this location with the similarities of the architecture and the lifestyle in general. Alsace stands apart from all other regions of France. The capital of Alsace, Strasbourg, is home to world renowned historical heritage sites, with the Grande Lle listed as UNESCO World Heritage. For information on visiting Alsace, visit the official website.

Disney Nerd: My top 10 Disney films

Disney Nerd header

Disney films are without a doubt my favourite films of all, but to narrow it down to a top ten has been a very difficult task for me, as a Disnerd, to accomplish. However, after a long thought (and discussion with my mother), I’ve managed to pick a top ten.  I’ve based this on the Walt Disney films and not included live actions or Disney Pixar. These are in order and took a LOT of thought, so without further ado…

10.Lady and The Tramp

lady-and-the-tramp

This canine love story is one that definitely pulls at my heart strings and as someone who prefers dogs over people, this is such a lovely film I enjoy curling up to watch. The soundtrack is beautiful, with ‘Bella Notte’ being my favourite song from the entire film.

9.The Aristocats

the-aristocats

Even if you’re a dog > cat person, it’s impossible to not love the tale of this feline family as they try and venture home to their mansion in Paris. The songs are catchy and the entire storyline is full of family friendly comedy and a plot to win you over and really make everybody want to be a cat.

8.The Lion King

the-lion-king

A true classic. The Lion King is a beautiful and emotional film but has the equal balance of comedy for it not to break your heart too much (Mufasa’s death anyone? Still gets me going even today.) The scenery of the film is gorgeous with the African colour scheme and beautiful wild animals. Of course, another film full of songs which will be etched in your mind for many years, including the famous ‘Circle of Life’, it’s no wonder the film inspired a Broadway/West End show.

7.Aladdin

aladdin

Starring the late Robin Williams, this is definitely one of his most finest pieces of work with the chucklesome Genie really being what makes this movie what it is. Of course, we can’t forget about the leading Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, who both share a beautiful love story, but where would a Disney film be without a splash of laughter?

6.A Goofy Movie

a-goofy-movie

To me, this film is highly underrated. A member of the classic Disney films, Goofy, takes his son Max, on a trip of a lifetime, which can only go wrong in true Goofy style. Another film with a great soundtrack full of toe-tapping hits, this film is one that any person who considers themselves a Disney fan needs to see in their lifetime.

5.Pocahontas

pocahontas

I used to watch this film every Sunday at my Gran’s without fail. Differing from most Disney princess fairytales, this tells the story of Powhatan Indian princess Pocahontas and English explorer, John Smith. Coming from two different worlds who are against one another, Pocahontas and John Smith are brought together during John’s search for a New World before falling for one another. The beautiful animation really introduces a historic native culture to the world and shares the love story of the diverse love interests. Definitely a classic almost forgotten from the Disney films.

4.Beauty and the Beast

beauty-and-the-beast

Who couldn’t be in love with Beauty and the Beast? From the hearty characters and the well known songs, not to mention the beautiful animation by Disney. Another wonderful story which teaches that love is love and not defined by a person’s looks. Plus, how amazing is Gaston? One of the best villains going. As much as he isn’t a feminist, you just love to hate him and his selfishness.

3.Sleeping Beauty

untitled

Another Disney princess film I adore is Sleeping Beauty. The magic and thrill of it all is so enticing and I’m absolutely in love with the three good fairies.  The fact that even though they are unaware of who the other person is, Aroura and Phillip are willing to fight for one another’s love, though it ends up they were destined to be together all along. Thank goodness they were actually going to be set up with each other the entire time, right?

2. Peter Pan

peter-pan

A definite close second, the entire story of Peter Pan and the idea of Neverland has had me in awe since a little girl. A world where growing up doesn’t exist and adventure awaits is truly something I admire and long to exist. Although the music, animation and characters were what appealed to me most as a child, perhaps now at an older age where I’m becoming a young woman with many responsibilities and fear the future is the reason I truly have fallen in love with Neverland.

1. 101 Dalmatians

101-dalmatians

Of course, having owned four dalmatians of my own, it’s no surprise that this is my number one Disney film of all time. I’ve been obsessed since I was quite literally a baby and owned more than a fair few hundred of stuffed Dalmatian toys. The thought of that many dogs actually does excite me, despite being a lot of work and for some reason unknown, the breed has always been one I’ve been most attracted to when it comes to dogs. I love to hate Cruella and following the puppies as they prove that dogs are in fact smarter than you think is such an exciting and entertaining story which I love to relive again and again.
