Women's March Against Trump

Cardiff Women March in Solidarity Against Trump’s Presidency

Saturday 21st January saw the world unite as they protested Donald Trump’s inauguration. The UK, along with the rest of the world, saw thousands of people across the country getting involved to express their rights and show support to America’s Anti-Trump campaign. Cardiff, the capital of Wales, were no different. Within 24 hours of Trump being sworn into Presidency, Cardiff was one of the many countries to march through their city centre in protest. The march was hosted by Welsh organisers Cardiff Sisters of Solidarity’s Gwenno Dafydd and Claudia Boes.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the event due to illness, but some amazing members of the Cardiff Feminist Network were more than willing to share their experience of the powerful event. Feminist, Sam, shared with me the experience from a participant’s point of view.

I marched against Trump because his rhetoric makes me feel unsafe. It’s not just his misogyny.  He has admitted sexual assault  people still voted for him.  He has encouraged hatred of muslims and people of colour, my partner is muslim and a p.o.c.  He has said that vaccines cause autism – as if autism is something to be feared.  My child is autistic and it’s frustrating to hear these old myths resurface after being disproven many times.  I also marched in solidarity with anyone else who has now been made more vulnerable.

I had taken a break from activism because I had really felt that there was no point.  I have seen my country turn from a place that I felt it was OK to be different  – to a place that’s increasingly racist, insular ignorant and nasty, with no sign of things improving.  With Trump in the Whitehouse and the influence that the US has over the rest of the world I didn’t see it getting better any soon, I wondered what the point was in fighting.
I arrived at the Nye Bevan statue at 1 pm and I was amazed at the number of people who gathered there. I have been to many protests in Cardiff and I have never seen such a huge turn out.

why feminism is important

Why Feminism is important to me

CN:  Rape, slut-shaming and abuse are some of the topics discussed but not in great detail

feminism

ˈfɛmɪnɪz(ə)m/

noun

The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.

I may have mentioned it once or twice, but never really gone into much about why I’m a feminist and why it’s important to me. People often tend to see the topic as ‘taboo’ or really misinterpret what feminism is about. It is not something in which women are “man haters” or feel that the female gender is superior to the male. The female gender has been oppressed for as long as history can remember. Of course, not everyone is aware of the history and often tend to base it on “well, I don’t feel oppressed, my life is great,” or ” I treat women with respect, therefore there is equality,” which is rather closed minded. I can straight away admit that growing up in my life, it was a close-knit family and there was indeed a lot of respect for all genders. However, it’s when I began to finally socialise more, make friends out of my small, caucasian-based community that I began to really see the difference. In the last few years, I’ve made friends from pretty much every walk of life. Non-binary genders, LGBTQA+ community, different races, religions, rich, poor, famous, nobodies and you really begin to learn.

Feminism is important to me. Feminism is important to me because there are so many consequences of being a female. Even if up in my life until I finally stepped foot out into the world I felt extremely privileged, you wake up and see reality. Feminism is important to me because when I or my female friends or family go out, we are told “to be careful” and “don’t walk alone” because there is a fear of being raped. Feminism is important to me because we as a society are teaching women to change how we dress instead of teaching men to not rape. Because approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales alone every year, meaning there’s roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour. These figures include assaults by penetration and attempts. And usually, there is very much a lot of victim blaming.

Plus Sized Picks: Autumn/Winter 2016

plus-sized-picks

If you’ve not gathered from my new series, ‘Celebrity Bargain Buy’, I’m quite keen on fashion. I normally don’t discuss the kind of fashion I wear, etc. as I suffer with extreme low self esteem, in particular with my weight. But, the blogging community has given me enough of a boost to at least talk about clothes I like, even if I don’t model them myself. I’ve seen a few lovely plus-sized bloggers as of late and I thought I’d dedicate a post to some clothes I’ve been eyeing up/have intentions of purchasing anytime soon.

New Look Curves Black Floral Embroidered Sweater

new-look-black-floral-embroidered-sweater

The floral embroidered trend seems to be creeping out of the woodworks and when I saw this I thought it was really pretty. I’d love to get this and team it up with a pleather jacket and some biker boots. It’s a great piece for layering and keeping you warm, but without feeling as if you’re filling your wardrobe with too much festivity.

Available from New Look for £19.99

New Look Curves White Respect Women #DumpTrump T-shirt

new-look-dump-trump

Now, I don’t like to blog about my political views, but I’m not going to hide away my views. I love statement tops and with this being for women, against Trump (though he has just been elected to be the 35th President of the United States. Ugh.), I love this top and I’m planning on getting it ASAP. I always love tops such as this, but more so when it reflects my personality or belief, which is similar to a t-shirt I previously owned from a charity close to my heart.

Available from New Look for £7.99

ASOS Curve Curve Neck Jumper

asos-crew-neck

This is a pretty basic crew neck jumper but I just love the colour for this time of year. Again, something I’d love to team up with my pleather jacket with the faux fur trim as well as some chunky boots and jeans, topped off with a scarf. This piece has potential to play a role in many different outfits and I really like it.

Available from ASOS for £16.00

ASOS Curve Ultimate Bomber Jacket

asos-curve-ultimate-bomber-jacket

On one of my online window shopping sessions, I came across this beauty. Bomber jackets are really all the rage right now and while I’d love a dusty pink one, I don’t think I’d feel as confident as I would in a darker colour such as this one. Lots of people are wearing these with dresses which is a really cute look, but for me I’d team it up with a long top or jumper and some Vans or Converse.

Available from ASOS for £22

Black Chic Plus Size Bar Code Organza Patchwork T-Shirt

exciting-rose-gal

I really like this top and it reminds me of something Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson would wear. It’s something I’m actually considering to ask for this Christmas. I would love to team this up with a leather and boots.

Available from RoseGal for £17.60

Katy Perry Nasty Woman shirt

Welcome back to ‘Celebrity Bargain Buy’, where I’ll be sharing with you some fashion pieces worn by celebrities which are available for an affordable price.

Today is Katy Perry’s ‘Nasty Woman’ top which she snapped a pic of herself wearing on Instagram. The t-shirt is a mockery of a comment made by Donald Trump about Hillary Clinton in a recent debate for the Presidential Race.
